Free Short Drama Apps (2026): I Checked All 32 on Reddit's Free List
Published
Reddit's most-upvoted list of free short drama apps is a September 30 post on r/Vertical_Dramas with more than 500 upvotes. It names 32 apps "that don't charge," and the poster says "none of them require you to buy anything."
I couldn't install 32 apps, so I looked each one up instead. In October 2026 I checked every app on the US App Store and Google Play: who makes it, whether it sells anything, and what its recent reviews say. I also counted the free episodes on nine ReelShort shows and four DramaBox shows, because those are the apps most people are trying not to pay for.
Only four of the 32 are free apps from companies I'd trust. Fourteen sell coins, VIP passes or ad removal, so "don't charge" is generous. Eleven sell nothing on Google Play and run on ads, and I couldn't tell you who's behind most of them. Three I couldn't find at all. And the best-known free app on the list, FreeReels, started pushing VIP in September, going by its reviews.
The Short Answer
| App | Phone | Made by | What's free | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PineDrama | iPhone and Android | TikTok | Every show I tried, start to finish | Ads; the Android listing has in-app purchases; mostly AI shows |
| FreeReels | Android (not on the US App Store) | Skywork AI, part of Kunlun Tech | Most shows, with ads | Since September, reviewers report VIP-only shows and an ad before every episode |
| DramaReels | iPhone | Skywork AI ("From the creators of FreeReels") | Most shows, with ads, per its reviews | I couldn't test it; the App Store lists VIP from $9.99 to $119.99 |
| TikTok and TikTok Lite | TikTok on both; Lite on Android | TikTok | Shows posted in full, plus mini-drama apps that run inside TikTok | Hard to search; some mini dramas make you watch an ad per episode |
Outside apps, the studios' own YouTube channels are free and legal. ShortMax's channel posts some shows as complete movies, as I found for my werewolf list.
FreeReels: Still Free, But Less Than It Was
FreeReels is the app most people mean when they say free short dramas. In February 2026 it was the most-downloaded short drama app in the world, as I noted in my ReelShort alternatives. It's made by Skywork AI, the Singapore arm of Kunlun Tech, the Chinese company behind DramaWave. On Google Play it has more than 100 million downloads and a 4.7 from 2 million reviews.

Its listing still says "Always free to access — no subscriptions, no limits," and one of its promo images reads "No VIP, No Paywalls." The same page carries Google Play's "In-app purchases" label, with items from $0.99 to $119.99.
Since early September, long-time users have been describing a different app:
- "now I can only watch 10-12 episodes before it tells me I need to pay to continue" (September 15, 81 helpful votes). The same reviewer quoted the "no subscriptions, no limits" line back at the company.
- "Instead I was told I had to BUY a VIP membership to continue." (September 2)
- "They have a screen now that pops up for VIP for $11.99 a month for ad-free viewing." (September 10)
- "you have to watch at least 30 sec ads for every single episode. So if the drama has 59 episodes, you also have to watch 59 ads" (September 7, 195 helpful votes)
- Some series are "now behind a paywall aka VIP." (September 15)
Plenty of people still call it free. The most-liked review, from September 17 with 603 helpful votes, says "at least it's 100% FREE!!", and many October reviews say the same. A four-star review from October 18 lands in between: "we have to pay an enormous amount of money lately," just for a week, though some dramas are "still TOTALLY FREE FOR NOW."
FreeReels also rewards watching with diamonds, which users in some countries can cash out, and the payouts are shrinking too. A late-August update turned reviewers' diamonds into cash at pennies ("1 million diamonds became $1"), and the September 15 reviewer says the rules changed again on September 8, leaving their area unable to redeem.
It's still the biggest free option on Android. Expect an ad per episode and some shows behind VIP. I get why it's happening, since 100 million installs cost money to serve. But then the listing should stop saying "no limits."
On iPhone, It's DramaReels
FreeReels isn't on the US App Store. The same company's iPhone app is DramaReels. Its description begins "From the creators of FreeReels," it lists Skywork AI as the developer, and it's rated 4.9 from about 41,000 ratings.

DramaReels wouldn't connect on my network, so I haven't watched anything on it. The reviews on its store page call it free with ads: "It is completely free just have to watch ads which I don't mind because they aren't long" (July), and "No long adds, no being forced to purchase" (September 27).
But the App Store also lists VIP memberships from $9.99 to $119.99 and ticket packs up to $29.99. I wouldn't be surprised if DramaReels goes the way FreeReels went on Android.
How Far ReelShort and DramaBox Go for Free
You can finish a ReelShort or DramaBox show without paying, and on some ReelShort shows it's quicker than you'd think.
Every show sets its own number of free episodes. I counted on my iPhone in October, then added the shows I'd counted on the two companies' websites for my ReelShort vs ShortMax comparison and DramaBox review:
| Show | App | Episodes | Free |
|---|---|---|---|
| I Don't Need No Alpha Brothers | ReelShort | 61 | 14 |
| Your Love Broke My Heart | ReelShort (website) | 52 | 14 |
| How to Tame a Silver Fox | ReelShort (website) | 71 | 12 |
| First Daughter: Forbidden Duty | ReelShort | 68 | 11 |
| The Triplets' Final Regret | ReelShort | 51 | 8 |
| My Firefighter Ex-Husband Burns in Regret | ReelShort (website) | 56 | 7 |
| You Belong with Me | ReelShort (website) | 79 | 7 |
| The football captain insists on drinking my breast milk | ReelShort | 30 | 6 |
| The Boss Affair | ReelShort | 54 | 4 |
| Divorced at the Wedding Day | DramaBox (website) | 51 | 18 |
| Submitting to My Bestie's Dad | DramaBox | 60 | 12 |
| Forbidden Fling With My Bestie's Dad | DramaBox | 51 | 10 |
| The Gift Bride of a Mafia Don | DramaBox (website) | 60 | 8 |
So ReelShort gave away 4 to 14 episodes across nine shows, and DramaBox 8 to 18 across four. The 30-episode show gave 6 and the 54-episode show gave 4, so length doesn't decide it. The three live-action ReelShort shows I opened in the app gave 4, 11 and 14, so live action versus AI doesn't decide it either.

After the free run, both apps let you keep going with ads and daily check-ins. On some ReelShort shows, the lock screen lets you unlock the whole show by watching seven ads. Not every show has that option, and ReelShort blocks screenshots of that screen, so I can't show it.
Otherwise, you go a few episodes at a time. Neither company publishes its daily limits. Going by users, ReelShort's ads add up to about six episodes a day, and DramaBox's about the same. One DramaBox user in the Reddit thread said "Right now I have no ad cap," so it may vary by account. At six a day, the rest of a 60-episode show takes about eight days.
ReelShort pushes its weekly VIP hard while you wait. This offer popped up in the app with a countdown: $15.99 for the first week, then $19.99 a week until you cancel. Forget about it and that's more than $1,000 a year.

On ReelShort's website, the weekly VIP started at $9.99 the first time I checked in September, and the price changed on later visits. Web subscriptions are harder to cancel, though, as I explained in the ShortMax comparison.
Reddit's 32 "Free" Apps, Checked
The poster says the apps are "available through the PlayStore," so this is an Android list. Many aren't on the US App Store, and several that share a name on iPhone come from a different company.
I sorted them by what the store listings show. "In-app purchases" means Google Play shows that label. It doesn't always mean you'll hit a paywall, but it means there's something to buy.
Free, From Companies I'd Trust (4)
PineDrama, FreeReels, TikTok and TikTok Lite, all covered above. PineDrama has its own full review.
Free to Start, But They Sell Coins, VIP or Ad Removal (14)
| App | Developer on Google Play | Installs | In-app purchases | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| My Drama | Holy Water | 10M+ | $0.99–$224.99 | Really a paid app; 5 to 10 free episodes a show when I last checked |
| FreeBits | Holy Water | 1M+ | $3.49–$104.99 | My Drama's free sibling; reviewers say an ad comes with every episode after the first few |
| MiniDrama | Moboreader (Changdu on iPhone) | 10M+ | $0.99–$199.99 | Says "100% Free"; see below |
| FreeDrama | Kuku Technologies (Kuku FM) | 10M+ | $0.49–$19.99 | Launched April 2026; the iPhone FreeDrama is from another company and has no ratings |
| BibiShort | SHENPENGFEI (TOPREEL GLOBAL on iPhone) | 500K+ | $0.99–$149.99 | Says it "gathers popular resources across the web"; reviewers say it's free "as long as you are willing to wait" |
| YouDrama | Dovi Tools | 1M+ | $1.99–$12.99 | The iPhone YouDrama is a different company; see below |
| OneDrama | Dovi Tools | 1M+ | $1.99–$12.99 | Same developer as YouDrama on Android |

| VelixDrama | HENDRA STUDIO | 50K+ | $4.99–$99.99 | Launched August 2026 |
In MiniDrama's iPhone reviews this month, one reviewer saw ads of one to two minutes, then "the drama lasted maybe 45 sec then another ad." Another "spent $25 to purchase VIP access for a week" and hit a paywall after 55 episodes. A third subscribed with Apple Pay on the web and found it "Doesnt show up as an app subscription so there's no ability to cancel in the app itself."
Ads Only, Nothing to Buy on Google Play (11)
AmorDrama, DramaFree, DramaLoop, FlashReel, FreeJoy, FreeShort, MeloShort, NaviCore, PeakShort, ReelsVerse and RushDrama Pro.
None lists in-app purchases on Google Play, so ads pay the bills. Most are small, and several look odd once you read the listing:
- FlashReel's Google Play title is "FlashReel – Film Explorer," and it calls itself "a movie and TV show information app."
- NaviCore describes itself as a lightweight browser.
- AmorDrama, listed under a person's name, shares a developer email with PeakShort. Moderators of r/CShortDramas put a "Peakshort" on their list of subscription-scam sites. I can't tell whether it's the same one.
- MeloShort has 10M+ installs on Google Play; its iPhone version is listed under a person's name.
- The list has two FreeShorts. I found one on Google Play (ASTRASTORY, 10M+, rated 3.2). The iPhone FreeShort comes from a different company.
- FreeJoy comes from HK IReader Technology and mixes novels with dramas. The iPhone version has a 1.8 from five ratings.
- DramaFree has 5M+ installs; DramaLoop, ReelsVerse and RushDrama Pro each have 100K+.
Short drama studios make money by charging for their shows. An app with a big catalog, nothing to sell and an unknown developer has to get its shows from somewhere, and I can't tell you where. I'm not calling these pirate apps, because I can't prove it. I'm not linking them either.
Couldn't Find (3)
Gonzo, Passion Drama Lite, and the second FreeShort. Searching for Gonzo turns up unrelated apps.
What Commenters Added
- StoReel isn't on the list, but one commenter loves it: "you can watch entire show by watching ads and getting bonus that you can use to unlock an episode," mostly BL. It's rated 4.8 on the App Store from about 2,300 ratings. Its reviews are split. Some people get about 15 episodes a day with ads, others hit a lock after five, and a few say they paid for a subscription that never arrived.
- WinkNovel: a commenter watched a whole show "getting 2 ads every 3 episodes," though the VIP "pricing is horrendous." The iPhone app has a 1.0 from 14 ratings.
- Popkety and Mangogo are mini-drama apps that run inside TikTok. You watch an ad to unlock each episode, but according to one commenter, "the ads are unlimited."
The post also lists 14 websites. Besides big video sites (Dailymotion, TikTok, YouTube, Rumble) and three services for long Asian dramas (Viki, iQIYI, WeTV), the rest re-host other apps' shows or link to sites that do, and I'm not linking them. The poster does flag problems with two of the big ones. Dailymotion's app runs "as many as 10-12 ads per ad break." YouTube uploads are mostly Chinese dramas under made-up titles, often with "one-track audio" that drops the background sound.
Spotting a Subscription Trap
The bigger risk is an app that bills you $20 a week after you installed it for one show.
The clearest case I found is YouDrama on iPhone. It's made by DAOWEI Network Technology, not Dovi Tools, which makes the Android YouDrama on Reddit's list. It's rated 4.1, but almost every recent review that mentions money is a complaint:
- "A short was presented on Facebook. When clicked to view more, pop up to download this app was linked to upon purchasing a subscription, found that video I was watching was not listed." (July)
- "I subscribed from a link of 1 drama I wanted to watch. After subscribing the drama was nowhere to be found" (May)
- "Once you subscribe, there is no way to cancel" (May)
Five checks would have caught it:
- Check the developer. FreeDrama, YouDrama, FreeShort, DramaLoop and ReelMax each have an iPhone app and an Android app from different companies.
- Look for in-app purchases. On the App Store it's a section near the bottom of the page; on Google Play it's the label under the title. A "free" app that sells a $19.99 VIP Membership is free until a certain episode.
- Read the newest one- and two-star reviews. YouDrama still has a 4.1, and FreeReels a 4.7.
- Be careful when an ad for one show sends you to install an app. Several YouDrama reviewers couldn't find the show from the ad, and plenty of PineDrama reviewers say the same.
- Pay through Apple or Google. A card typed into the app, or Apple Pay on a website, doesn't show up in your phone's subscription list. That's how the MiniDrama reviewer above got stuck, and it's behind most of the ShortMax complaints I covered before. The r/CShortDramas moderators give the same advice: pay through Apple, Google or PayPal.
To cancel:
- iPhone: Settings, then your name, then Subscriptions.
- Android: Google Play, tap your profile picture, then Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
- Paid on a website: log in with the same account and look for a VIP or subscription page. ReelShort's terms send you there.
- Card saved in Apple Wallet: open Wallet, tap the card, then ⋯ and Preauthorized Payments. Most ShortMax users who tried this said the charges stopped.
Deleting the app doesn't cancel anything. If none of this works, ask your bank to block the merchant.
FAQ
What's the best free short drama app? On iPhone, PineDrama. The US App Store lists no in-app purchases for it, and I watched a show to episode 58 of 59 without a lock. On Android, FreeReels has the biggest free catalog, but it now has VIP-only shows and an ad before most episodes. PineDrama works on Android too.
Is there a short drama app with no ads and no payments? Not one I'd trust. The free ones pay for themselves with ads. The Reddit poster says TikTok has no ads on its dramas, but TikTok still runs ads in the feed.
Can I watch ReelShort for free? Yes, with ads. The nine shows I counted gave away their first 4 to 14 episodes. On some shows, watching seven ads unlocks the rest of the show. On the others, users say daily ads and check-ins add about six episodes a day, so a long show takes a week or more.
Why can't I find FreeReels on my iPhone? It isn't on the US App Store. The same company's iPhone app is DramaReels.
Are the apps on Reddit's free list safe? Four come from companies I'd trust. Fourteen sell something despite the "free" label, and most of the other eleven come from developers I couldn't identify. Check the developer and the in-app purchases before installing.
My Pick
For free with ads, start with PineDrama. On Android, add FreeReels while it lasts, and expect it to keep tightening. On iPhone, DramaReels is the FreeReels equivalent. I'd give it a go, though I couldn't get it to load myself.
If there's one ReelShort show you have to finish, check the lock screen first, because on some shows seven ads unlock the whole thing. Otherwise, on ReelShort or DramaBox, the free episodes plus daily ads get you there in a week or two. If you'd rather pay, buy one week of VIP through Apple or Google and cancel the same day. You keep the week, and it costs $15.99 to $19.99.
Skip the ad-only apps from unknown developers, and treat "100% free" on any listing as a claim to check. For more options, see my ReelShort alternatives. For the steamier end, there's the 18+ vertical dramas of October.
